OFELIA COULDN’T KNOW WHERE SHE WOULD find Zeke, and yet she didn’t deviate from the direction she’d chosen even once. It was as if she had her own feelings about how things should play out, which is why she wasn’t surprised when she found Zeke on the ground at the northeast corner of Jackson Square. He wasn’t alone either. He was on his knees, his back pressed to the wrought iron fence posts, and there were three mimes in a half circle in front of him.

It didn’t look as if they were having a pleasant conversation.

Ofelia couldn’t make out whatever was being said—all the talking was obviously on Zeke’s end—but she didn’t care what words were being exchanged. She just wanted the pain Sully was in on the other side of the riverwalk steps to dissipate.

“Hey!” she roared as she started across the street, her angle sharp. “Get away from him!” She threw out an arc of magic that had the mimes flying through the air and crashing into the pedestal base where Felix often posed when he was acting as a human statue. The mimes finally made noises, although it was only shrill grunts.

Ofelia jogged across the street—the traffic was stopped at the light—and threw another bit of magic in that direction to keep the light red. The motorists wouldn’t like it. She suspected they would start honking and yelling before long. It would give her a bit of time to deal with her current problem without people gawking at her through windows, though.

“Are you okay?” she demanded of Zeke. He had a light sheen of sweat coating his features and looked as if he were about to be sick. That was enough to give Ofelia pause. Had Sully felt his father’s injury, or whatever was plaguing him? She didn’t think about it too long before she turned her attention back to the mimes. “What will it be, boys?”

The mimes looked caught. Their expressive faces told Ofelia that they hadn’t been expecting her appearance … and perhaps they weren’t ready to face off with her after all.

“Make a choice,” Ofelia gritted out. “Stay and fight, lose your lives, or go.” Part of her wondered if she should let them run. The other part knew she had to secure Zeke’s safety, if only because it apparently meant she would be securing Sully’s safety as well.

The mimes looked between one another, seemingly debating. Then they backed away from her. They waited until they were a safe distance away to turn back. They bowed in tandem, smiles spreading across their faces. One of them jabbed a finger into the air and twirled it, as if to say, “The world will keep spinning, and we will keep coming.” Then they disappeared into the night, heading toward Bourbon Street rather than the riverwalk.

That was a welcome realization to Ofelia.

She turned to Zeke with a purpose and dropped to her knees. Her hands immediately went to the side he was favoring, and when she lifted his shirt, she found blood waiting for her.
